forgot to mention: last week i signed up for the secret santa weblog, wish list thing. [not sure what to call it really]. i signed up last year and received the shipping news. so looking forward to this year.
basically you need to have a weblog and an amazon wish list [my amazon wish list is mainly a bookmark of the things i like and need/want to buy].
you are given the site and wish list of the person, then you buy something
for them from their wishlist. and then someone does the same for you.
you get a gift and maybe a new friend! how exciting, sign up and become a secret santa!

monday
i haven't been able to sleep very soundly lately. last night was the worst. i would hear strange sounds inside my bedroom. open my right eye. slowly adjust to the room and try to spot whatever was going on. when i couldn't see anything i would pretend to roll over as one does when sleeping to scan the other side of the room. paranoid. nothing different. no one in the room and nothing had fallen, tilted, spilt, or broke. at about 3:20am, the familiar flipping sound of pages in a magazine. again, looking around, nothing. another was a voice, a small child, 4:16am. then my mind would start to construct bizarre, horrific scenarios of possible causes for the sounds. over-active imaginations can be really bad, especially when trying to calm oneself. i flicked on the table lamp next to the bed. the mess of papers, cables, computers, and clothes were still in their places. the stack of internet world still neatly stored in the corner. everything checks out. light out, try to sleep. no luck. odd, peculiar sounds caught my ear for the rest of the night.
after pondering the sounds over some coffee this morning i have concluded that they were from outside the house, in the neighborhood and over the back wall, the late night train passing by. i left the panel to the attic in my room open last night because i am running network cables to the downstairs rooms. no sense in closing it because i am not finished. with that panel wide open all the sounds were probably filtering through the outside vents into the attic and down into my room. has to be the answer...
on a better note and lack of sleep sunday morning's clear sky and bright sun provided an excellent day for picture takin'
i hear the old jp andrews building that housed the horrible madisons sports bar is being remolded and replaced with an "adult bar". not sure what that means. i am hoping it will be a martini bar or a hip lounge no college students. that would be sweet!
lot's of photos for november! sorry modem users! :)

wednesday
fast week. keeping myself busy with odd jobs, repairing computers, launching a redesign, and trying to get interested in a new book. i decided on this book due to some philip k. dick books i have read, plus the fact that a lot of current computer jargon has come from gibson's books, i figured i could relate to the "techie" story. it is noted as the best sf book to date. so far i am having a tough time reading it. too many fantasy words and japanese names. of course i am only on page 20. i do know what is going on but it is a little arduous to keep the characters and situations all together compounded with his tech jargon.
some photos of a few signs in san luis.

san luis obispo railroad square fire photos
i was able to gain access to the railroad square building and see the damage first hand. we had to sign wavers, don hard hats, and sign another sheet showing "entrance" and "exit" times. the entire building is surrounded by a makeshift chain-link fence. the smell of smoke is thick and the scent of water and heat weigh heavy throughout each office space. upon entrance, the feeling of inspecting an abandoned building vacant for years. soot marks, water peeling away the sheetrock, furniture overturned, soggy papers strewn over the floor. each step met with the squish of water-logged carpet or the cracking of broken glass. the bottom level of the building suffered mostly water, heat, and smoke damage. the stairwell from the north side, where the fire started, is completely charred. as you can see from the photos each step leading to the top floors will crumble with the slightest touch. out of this horrible sight i can’t help to see how interesting a fire is. examining the trail the fire left behind. follow it up the stairs, along the side walls, overtaking half of the second floor and then finally engulfing the entire third floor. some things are still intact untouched from the blaze. a wall covered in flames and the adjacent wall showing only peeling paint. cracked glass blocks or blown out windows leaving behind a white plaster opening. as if the fire is selective in its wrath.
the cause of the fire is still under investigation. hopefully this will not be left unsolved. I already miss this building.
more photos from the railroad square fire.

the new pearl jam album was released today. i downloaded it two months ago and i really dig it even though their songs have evolved into more mature, surreal tunes, they always have a few that call back to the rock and roll of the early days! like i said i downloaded the album, but now that it is in the stores, i will buy it.

san luis obispo railroad square fire
looks like my old office building, in the railroad square, caught fire last night at about 1am. from what i have gathered the fire started in the stairwell that lead into my actual office space. traveled up the three flights of stairs, burnt half the second floor and the entire third floor. in the picture of the third floor window you can see the sky where the roof used to be.
early estimates suspect arson. only the firefighters can really tell what damage has been done to my old office space or the architects next door. the lawyers on the third floor have lost everything and i imagine some of the offices on the second floor has suffered enormous damage as well. the structure of the brick building is fairly sound just from looking at it. i could see the heavy timber that was the frame of the building was still intact too so i don't think this historic building will need to be torn down. but everything is unknown at this point. the building wont be open to the occupants until tomorrow morning.

sunday
the rain has finally tapered off. this was a pretty heavy storm. almost on scale with a seattle summer day. living in california one never really experiences the 4 seasons of nature. mostly just summer and summer. maybe some spring when there is a slight chill in the air. the trees do change colors, though. two colors. green or dead. sometimes, if one looks hard enough. signs of winter can be spotted.

thursday
the ca lottery had a jackpot of $23million last night. i thought i should give it a try. i played $5 last night with only 30 minutes before the cut off time. so out of the 5 rows of 6 numbers i only had 3 numbers from those that were picked by the "random" computer. but those three were on the same row. 5, 22, 43. pretty cool i thought. when i played in the past this was just $5. so i figured i got my $5 back. but i guess now they determine it by the amount of 3 number winners. turns out it is actually $9. not bad. but, this is the thing that really gets me, last weeks results show 3 numbers winning $10. less 3 number winning tickets were sold. yesterdays winning results show someone won the jackpot, $23mil. uncle sam is happy. but it also shows that 5 people won 5 numbers. so that is 5 regular numbers and the 6th number being the mega number. 5 plus the mega, you win the $23mil. if you just had the 5 numbers, with no mega, you win....$30,070. what? does that seem right? so one more number and you are a multi-millionaire?
get 5, sorry just $30k? that kind of cash would nice but those are pretty crappy odds. i would think it should be in the hundred-thousands for having 5 numbers...what a game.
but i might play the game again.

wednesday
so cold in the mornings now and i know it will become even colder in the coming months. it takes too long to heat this house. the fireplace is fantastic but my room/office is upstairs. the linux case fan blows directly onto my feet.
i need to have a great meal at a restaurant soon. sit down, great service, great food, great drink. no more hamburgers and burritos for once.
i have some free passes to the local theatre and i am not using them.

friday
last minute costume, drinks, candy, and friends. great time this halloween. i was asked who i was supposed to be, last minute thing was my reply. deal with it. it was fun. at this party we were put into groups and sent on a scavenger hunt for about 40 items. let loose into the neighborhood at 9:30. we lost, by like 2 points. come on. so after that we went downtown to see all the drunk and naked people. the more i drink the less my camera works.
