saturday
i have been using my laptop since my hard drive crashed in my desktop machine on august 15. almost 3 weeks ago. i am going to start getting the desktop back up an running. i need some documents from the other drive on it, plus i need to start recording and ripping my cds and run backups with the cd burner. i am going to run the recovery program one more time to see if i am missing something that it is recovering but i am marking as fragments. then i will format the drive and send it back to seagate for a replacement.
i am still really bummed about the whole crash. should have saw it coming. over the years i have been so close to hard drive crashes. everyday i find that there was something else on that drive that i lost. damn.
like i said since the crash i have been using my laptop to do all my work. cranked out three web sites from this thing. i miss the desktop a bit. mostly to get back to a larger machine, the whole thing, larger keyboard, mouse, screen.

friday
i think i should write down this observation. my bank has only two atm machine on the its facade. they both allow for money to be withdrawn, but only one will allow for deposits. the majority of the time, say 93.2%, when i walk up to the atm machines with the deposit slip in hand, there is someone at the atm that allows for deposits only.
the problem is that the person is usually withdrawing money. meanwhile the other atm machine is empty, waiting. so i sit there, waiting. occasionally the
person waiting for their money will say 'that one works', and i think, should i even bother to respond? i may, depends on the mood. if i do justify their statement with a response i will say 'yeah, that one doesn't do deposits'. maybe it is the way the machines are built. the deposit atm machine is much larger in size. same size screen but just in a bigger opening. it may also be that when coming from the parking lot it is the first machine one approaches.
why is this an issue, it's just me.. i don't like to wait when i don't need to, and i don't care for going inside to the tellers.

thursday
taking sometime off work to up up north with jen this weekend.
hopefully
getting some time in to check out ikea. i love that store...very cool...if you
have never been i suggest you browse the store when you find one and have
the lots of time [you'll need it trust me]. it is a big place. two
levels. the top level is all the stuff setup in a floor-room type style. all the furniture is setup and
displayed in an actual setting. the kitchen section is setup with all the kitchen crap they sell with the accessories and even counter
tops with sinks [turned the faucet once, they don't function]. bedrooms,
living rooms, dinning rooms, play rooms, all that stuff. you can test the charis, couches, bedding, lights, cups, plates, glasses, but not the knives...i usually maneuver through some back doors to get
to the shopping area to pick out all the stuff i want and don't need...wait...of course i need it.

saturday
not much to say, no luck with the data recovery yet. still working on it. although i am dealing with it a little better each day.
visited my parents today in cambria. my sister and mat were there too. we bbq'd and visited for awhile. my grandmother, or oma as we call her, is coming over the second week of september from hamburg germany. she is my father's mother [that sounds strange doesn't it?]. this will be the longest she has ever stayed in the states. she is planning for a 6 month visit. due to the length she will need a visa. it will be so nice to see her. it has only been a year, last year she was here for her 80th birthday. she is in such good shape too. aren't most european grandparents? i mean all the years of pure fat and raw meat...what are americans thinking with this non fat stuff? : ). it is amazing to see that she is not frail at all.
who misses pictures? a strange dog was sitting in a parked truck at the neighbor's house...what is going through his mind?

friday
this can't be happening, this did not happen man...i just lost a lot of my data on my slave drive which is 40 gigs. i had about 22 gigs of it filled. all my personal digital photos, invoicing program, 12 gigs of mp3s, adobe programs, and just a lot of stuff i used was on that drive. i feel shitty. man this sucks. and you can tell by what i am writing that i have no back ups. well, i have backups, but nothing recent. this sucks....damn it! how did this happen?
i am downloading a few data recovery programs. they are expensive. so far i have found one that looks like it can recover about 12 gigs of data, so about half. my invoicing program is showing up. that is a relief.
damn damn damn!
so i have no new pictures to post on this site, becuase they were on this drive. i am viewing the last few entires and i feel a bit better knowing that the pictures that i may have lost are posted here.
my backups are about a month old of the invoicing program and my digital photos were last backed up in april. i am so pissed at myself. me of all people should have a backup server running....grabbing all the data. i will be doing that from now on. right now i am working from my laptop. getting everything running on this machine. i am so grateful that all my websites are on the linux box and i just backed that up yesterday. so that is all safe. i just wish i would have backed the most important stuff when i saw there maybe a problem with that 40 gig drive.
damn!

still wondering if it is worth it to own your own business...actually maybe just owning my business...things can be frustrating at times. i am definitely feeling the impact of this dot com bust. people are wanting everything for nothing. so i am starting to comply.

monday
the trip to santa barbara was great, we drove down, arrived at about 6, ate some dinner, coffee, walk around on state street, then hit the bars. things got pretty crazy i had forgotten how packed the streets and bars get. meet quite a few people. rob now has a new heaven as he calls it. it is the place the be. so more trips may be happening in the future. although next time, we need to get a hotel room. we actually left that night about 2:30 in the morning...i did that the weekend of jeremy's wedding...james and i headed out after the party...crazy.
all things are going good so far this week. like i said, i have three new sites to get out, so back to work.

saturday
rob and i have decided to head down to santa barbara for tonight. need a little change from the san luis night life. no place to stay yet, but maybe we wont need sleep. i got the itch to go when james and i stopped for coffee last weekend. rob is pretty fired up about it probably because san luis has a tame night scene. i wouldn't mind hitting the surf in goleta but i don't think time will allow for it. no sense in bring the wet suit and board for such a short trip.
next week is going to require a lot of time dedicated to work. i have three web sites i need to build and setup by next weekend. so i have to get all my fun out this weekend.

thursday
as i promised yesterday...
jeremy and laura's wedding was perfect. it was amazing to see all the old troops from the grand house. a home away from home for james at times. take t's. everyone was there, save one. but still it was awesome to see the gang again. and best of all not much has changed, everyone seems to be in the same state of mind(trip) they were two years ago. james was stoked to see them. we ended up driving back to slo around two in the morning from the party. what were we thinking? made it here at 4:10. i couldn't drive anymore after santa barbara, so james took the wheel. i tried to sleep a bit, but in a single cab truck and being 6 foot 6 inches...it makes for an uncomfortable snooze.
oh yeah, on the way down to the wedding we stopped in santa barbara for a bit, tracked down some coffee on state street, enjoyed the view of people. there were a ton of people because it just happened to be fiesta days. so many people in costumes and tiny bits of clothing. at first we just couldn't find a place to park, but then we lucked out. as we were going to head back onto the freeway james eyed a place. walking down state street a long for a weekend return. thinking about a mini vacation in a few weeks.
enough rambling...viva la woodencracker!

wednesday
it was great to have james come down to visit. brought me some coffee, sweet! of course the visit wasn't long enough but the short time he was hear we seemed to have slipped back into our old habits. i wonder if james is still recovering. i will post more on the wedding and some photos tomorrow.
on a music note today. just found out that sleater-kinney is releasing a new album this month. in the meantime, they are streaming the entire album from this web site. i like it so far [i have three other albums two of which are lps]. they are an all girl punk band from seattle. when it comes out on the 20th i will buy it...that's right i said buy! but in lieu of spending money on another compact disc, i am currently downloading the jimmy eat world album.
